August & September 2005 were banner months newswise & weatherwise. During August, the USA experienced Hurricane Dennis and in September it was Hurricanes Ophelia, Katrina and Rita! The devastation wrought by these natural disasters was horrific! Add forest fires in California, typhoons in the Pacific, and earthquakes in Tennessee...isn't it high time you thought about if such a disaster should strike closer to home? Are you ready? Do you have adequate emergency supplies stockpiled for rapid access if the need arises? Our recent CERT training could prove invaluable if only we heed what we were taught! Call me stupid, call me overcautious...or whatever...but I (and my house) are a whole lot more prepared than it was a couple months ago!! Is yours?? Earthquakes in Japan, reported global warming (with a diminishing icecap), appointment of a new chief justice, and the FEMA debacle...CNN News had a heyday!

GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life. Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range. In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

GPS
Not only are handheld GPS units used for fun, recreation, and business...but, sadly, a grim new use for GPS came into play during the urban search & rescue efforts during the Hurricane Katrina operation. Precise GPS readings were taken of "located" bodies for later retrieval.

Thanks to all who participated in the B2B bike ride. All of you did a great job carrying out your assignments. If not for you, supplies wouldn't have been delivered, stations may have shut down too early, and riders might still be trying to get home. New friends were made during this event and old friends were reunited. Don't forget the Fox Hunt & cookout at Floyd's hilltop QTH!! He will be at the next meeting to go over some fundamentals of "fox hunting". Everyone who reads this newsletter, even tho not a club member, is invited to come join us.

Due to the scheduled Bike Ride, finishing CERT training, and the Shelby Hamfest, September was a busy month! So the final work detail (last coat of paint on the new building) was placed on hold until calmer times.
The repeater, KF4WOD, 147.195, came into play when operations on the primary repeater (147.33) came to a halt during the Bike Ride and net control briefly switched operations to 147.195 until service returned to 147.33.
The Newsletter undergoes constant changes...with columns coming/going, in an attempt to bring you a newsy, easy-to-read format and platform to keep you, the reader, aware of the club's activities. Experimental typefonts, colors, and presentations are made on a regular basis to enhance that goal.
