GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

During the August meeting, we had no new visitors or new members to join the club.  With all the new techs amongst us now as a result of the recent exams at the Gamewell Fire Department, now would be a good time to invite any that you know  to the Sept 13th club meeting for fellowship & introductions!  CALL THEM NOW!! Please note! Speaking of Addresses... The LARC now has a brand-new web domain identity - thanks to Gary, KD4YTU!  He has secured for us the domain address of Lenoir-ARC.org (and .net) .  Gary will set up a number of email addresses using this domain and later will host our very own website on his server free of charge!  Add ti onally, this newsletter will be available on the website for viewing and/or printing simply by clicking on one of the several "tabs".  Work will begin shortly on the design and implementation of the new website!! Pg 2 REMINDER:  SEPTEMBER 13TH IS CLUB MEETING NIGHT AT THE EOC!  BRING A FRIEND The LARC Newsletter has been published each month (except during the club's "hibernation" period) since October 1986 (20 years minus 4) ! Repeater Committee : The Repeater status was discussed & several suggestions were offered ranging from trying a different frequency pair to switching to a 440 repeater for our operations.  

Disaster Trailer Committee :  A meeeting at the Hudson FD was postponed due to that unit's building being renovated. A LARC meeting will convene there when completed. Suggested: the disaster trailer be made into a generator & antenna carrier and other supportive equipment.

EOC Kiosk Committee :  The application for a station license was granted with the resultant call of KI4YHG.  This was followed up by an application for a vanity call sign and was received 3 weeks later with the call KR4EOC !

Never, since its inception back in 1986, has this Newsletter (and its sister Newsletter, the CARES-News) ever been so late in reaching its intended publication date.  The CARES-News was due on the 1st of September and this one...on the 5th of September.  But alas and alack...just too many things dumped on me at once this month...unplanned & unscheduled events that disallowed me meeting anything like "regular" publication dates for a publication(s) that is not exactly employment-driven.  Hi.  And the rest of September is looking to be pretty busy too, what with the Bike Ride on Sept 16th, club meetings, etc.  Then we have some recruiting to do as well...with 11 brand-new Technicians that just received their tickets this month as a result of the Gamewell Fire Department class. During October, I believe we have some training lined up.  October is also 2008 Club Officer Nomination Night and the Constitution & ByLaws revision too!
