Since 1955, a year after receiving my first ham ticket as W5CFZ, I have been teaching others morse code to help them obtain their ham ticket. After untold numbers of classes, both at club locations (in Greenville, SC and here in Lenoir) and at the local Community College, it appears that this sideline "hobby within a hobby" of mine is soon to come to an end! With the soon-to-be released FCC NPRM Docket 05-235, the content which emulates other countries by proposing to drop the code
requirement for all classes of licenses, it will mark the end of an era. The current code class may well be my last. While I, personally, am not a dyed-in-the-wool CW enthusiast, I hate to see it go. Sigh..

GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life. Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range. In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

GPS
Many uses of GPS exist these days. Not only do we gain usefulness from our own individual GPS applications such as motoring, hiking, boating, ham radio applications (like APRS)...Industry is fully encompassing GPS and its applications too! Truck companies track their long-haul units; Highway Patrol units are tracked to determine Patrolmen's whereabouts in times of emergencies; and fishing boats use GPS to locate and return to schools of fish. Prices have dropped recently on small handheld units! Do you have yours yet?

Well, it's almost that time again! Most of you have worked the same Bike Ride Aid Station or provided the same service (sweep vehicle, net control, shuttle, etc.) many times over. Why not try a
different
position this year to see what the rest of the route is like? Riders are in different physical conditions along the route than the way you are used to seeing them. You see different people and experience different problems that come with the area from which you are operating.
Note: There will be some ARES training (traffic handling) at the next meeting. See you there! 73 de KA4HKK
The 4th Repeater Work Detail...held on July 30th...was attended only by Jerry, KF4PJL, and Paul, KI4IPD. But what those two accomplished! Between the two of them, they completely covered the repeater building with its heavy tin outer covering...a daunting task! Exterior painting, building the shelves to support the repeater and power supply inside, minor trim work, and the installation of the coax feedline is all that remain to place 147.195 back on the air! The Newsletter undergoes constant changes...with columns coming/going, in an attempt to bring you a newsy, easy-to-read format and platform to keep you, the reader, aware of the club's activities. Experimental typefonts, colors, and presentations are made on a regular basis to enhance that goal.
