The Catawba Valley Hamfest for 2005 was nicely done...but from all reports I've heard from observers, attendance appeared down quite a bit from years past.  The reasons are not exactly clear.  Couldn't have been due to the weather because traveling conditions and the weather at the hamfest site were almost ideal.  One thing I did notice, especially this year, was the lack of Computer Dealers.  I always rely on them to pick up any parts, software, or peripheral devices I need for projects.  But then, I also noticed a lack of Ham Radio Dealers this year as well.  Could it be that these dealers all took a hiatus at the same time?  We can only hope it is temporary! GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Global Positioning System Jim N4EUX Field Day is just weeks away.  This is a good time to try out those new antennas and test your radios!  Not only will we be operating HF but we could set up a  VHF/UHF station as well. If you want to give your VHF/UHF rigs a workout, let me know.  I'd  like to congratulate one of our newest members, David Roberts, for passing his Tech class exam at the CV Hamfest.  Listen for KI4JSQ on the air soon.  I'd also like to congratulate members, Michalene Hall and James Snell on their wedding Saturday, April 23rd.            -73 de Tom, KA4HKK
On the cool, windy, misty morning of Saturday, April 30th, a group of erstwhile club members met atop "Bradshaw's Peak" to form a work detail to clean the grounds around the repeater site.  After much chainsawing, tree pruning, and bushhogging, the grounds were 100% improved!
