The Caldwell Amateur Radio Emergency Services (CARES) Net is called every Sunday night at 8:30 PM on the 147.33 (Hibriten) repeater. This is a formal directed net and is sponsored by the ARES. Its purpose is to train, and keep in readiness, a pool of qualified emergency radio operators in the event of a local and/or regional emergency.  Net checkins will be called by alpha groups and, unless you check in & out, you will be called again during the informal portion to offer any comments, etc.  The 147.33 repeater has a CTCSS tone of 141.3 mhz. The umbrella, that pedestrian implement, originated in ancient Egypt, where it was used by the royal family  and nobles as a symbol of rank in a theocratic society.  Practical use came later.

KF4WOD - 147.195 (N4NIN) (Continued from last month).  We now have the radio, antenna, and duplexer to work FM satellites using QRP.  But you need two other required pieces to make it all work; a computer (laptop or Palm)...and the vital tracking program!  An excellent tracking program may be downloaded at Satscape's website.   For a great Palm tracking program try PocketSat .
To find out how to link everything up and start enjoying QRP FM Satellite tracking go to
amsat.org for some beginning pointers or try the HeavensAbove website for more information. Remember...patience. ENJOY!                          -73, Rick

One of the best ways to sharpen your emergency communications skills is to check in to the weekly CARES Net (see column at right).
CV Hamfest Aftermath
The day dawned perfectly clear, tho chilly, but the daytime temps were a delight at 65 degrees...a perfect day for the Catawba Valley Hamfest!  The workers did their job with hardly a glitch.  It appeared all had a good time.  WELL DONE CATAWBA VALLEY HAMFEST TEAM!!
Looking for an all-band HF antenna that is easy to construct, costs nearly nothing (less than $35), and works great DX?  Then you may want to try this Loop antenna described in the November 1985 issue of QST.  The performance is vastly superior to a regular dipole and is more-or-less unidirectional.  While the antenna performs very well on 20, 15, and 10 meters, it really shines on 80 and 40 due to its high-angle of radiation.  A 275 foot spool of wire, 3 or 4 egg-type insulators, & some nylon rope & coax does it!
