GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Repeater Committee : James, N4NIN, reports that we are waiting for a warm  day and the tool to install the antenna connectors on the antenna and to try out our new crystals on our selected repeater  frequency.  It may be operational soon!!

EOC Kiosk Committee :  The kiosk is temporarily unavailable to members due to the fact that controlled drugs are now being stored in the rear portions of the top floor of Emergency Management and requires accompaniment of an EMT to gain access.  The kiosk may be moved towards the front of the top floor.

When I look back through the years, I sit in amazement of the pace of new ideas that incorporate advances made in both hardware and software for the ham radio operator!  Just a very few years ago, we didn't even have the PC or the Internet...much less the tools for facilitating support for the activities that increase our enjoyment of ham radio...but more importantly, the means and where-with-all to become valuable public-servants that justify our very existance as hams!  I am referring to programs such as Winlink, Echolink, IRLP, EnComms new Packet terminal software, and APRS.  Then there are websites such as WXSpots, Skywarn, Findmespot, and ScanNorthCarolina. One can only ask..WHAT'S NEXT??
