GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

While we have yet to shake the drought that has been plaguing us lately, the rains of recent have been a welcome sight.  It was beginning to look like the dust bowl around here for awhile.  Oh, speaking of the weather, the National Weather Service has a brand new transmitter on the air, broadcasting from an Iredell County communications tower, located in Mooresville, NC. The radio frequency is 162.525 Mhz. The callsign is KJY85 and is designed to cover the foothills and southern piedmont of North Carolina. According to a NWS website, the output power is 1000 watts. This station went into full operation a couple of days ago, sources state.

Plans for an ARES meeting at the EOC is in the offing...with NIMS 200 training as the order of business for the meeting.  Watch your email for a date and time announcement!
